WEEK 9 : FIELD WORKS ON CAMPUS OBSERVATIONS

In this week's class (Week 9), our discussion focused on the topic of IIUM as a sustainable campus.

IIUM can be considered a sustainable or green campus, as it has received various recognitions from national institutions acknowledging its efforts in promoting sustainability for students and the campus community. Some of the visible initiatives include the introduction of a no-straw policy in selected cafés and the prioritization of lanes for electric micromobility vehicles.

Campus sustainability is typically measured through six common indicators: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water usage, transportation, and education and research. Dr. Suhaimi also shared several simple daily practices to support sustainability, such as turning off lights and electrical appliances when leaving a room. In addition, IIUM has implemented several long-term efforts, including the establishment of food banks, the Zero Hunger program, and the introduction of the CFS Sejahtera Room.

Through various initiatives and continuous improvements, IIUM has shown its commitment to becoming a model of a sustainable campus. It serves as a good example of how educational institutions can contribute meaningfully to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
