Image
Reflection – Week 10: Measurement and Indicators for SDGs In Week 10, we delved into the crucial topic of measurement and indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This session emphasized the importance of having clear, structured, and measurable indicators to track the progress and effectiveness of efforts toward achieving sustainable development globally. We explored approximately seven main themes of SDG indicators, which include areas such as poverty, health, education, demographics, environment, economy, and governance. These themes represent key pillars of sustainable development and are essential in assessing the overall well-being and progress of societies. The SDGs themselves consist of 17 overarching goals, which are further broken down into 169 specific targets and supported by 240 measurable indicators. These indicators serve as quantitative tools to analyze trends, monitor changes, and evaluate whether we are making progress toward each g...

WEEK 9 : FIELD WORKS ON CAMPUS OBSERVATIONS

Image
In this week's class (Week 9), our discussion focused on the topic of IIUM as a sustainable campus. IIUM can be considered a sustainable or green campus, as it has received various recognitions from national institutions acknowledging its efforts in promoting sustainability for students and the campus community. Some of the visible initiatives include the introduction of a no-straw policy in selected cafés and the prioritization of lanes for electric micromobility vehicles. Campus sustainability is typically measured through six common indicators: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water usage, transportation, and education and research. Dr. Suhaimi also shared several simple daily practices to support sustainability, such as turning off lights and electrical appliances when leaving a room. In addition, IIUM has implemented several long-term efforts, including the establishment of food banks, the Zero Hunger program, and the introduction of t...

Week 8 Lecture Summary In today's class, during Week 8 of the lecture series, Dr. Suhaimi presented a topic on the significant roles of national and local institutions in Malaysia in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To achieve sustainable development goals within a country, efforts must align with SDG 17, which emphasizes the importance of cross-sector and cross-country collaboration in the pursuit of all SDGs by 2030. Dr. Suhaimi shared several examples of international collaborations aimed at advancing SDG targets across various areas, including finance, technology, and capacity building. He also introduced numerous UN entities involved in these efforts, many of which may have been unfamiliar to us. At the local level, the role of institutions in achieving the SDGs depends largely on how local and regional governments can contribute through bottom-up initiatives. However, several challenges may arise in localizing the SDGs, including finan...

WEEK 5 : SEJAHTERA AS LOCAL CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Image
In the fifth week, we continued from last week’s topic, focusing on Sejahtera as a local concept of sustainable development. One important highlight from this class was that Dr. Suhaimi began the session by asking the students whether they were familiar with the Madani concept currently being promoted in Malaysia by our Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim.  Basically, what we learned about localising, its generally about how a certain product or services fullfill their expectation and needs of their customer by keep it their identity. Meanwhile Localising sustanaibility it more about adapting sustainable practices to fit the needs of a specific area. It involves working with local people and organizations to create projects that protect the environment and benefit the community. This can include promoting green technology, supporting small businesses, using renewable energy, and protecting natural resources.
