WEEK 3 : MAQASID SYARIAH AND SDGs
In the third week of lessons, Dr. Suhaimi began the class by introducing us to the vision and mission of IIUM, highlighting its commitment to producing balanced and harmonious individuals. He also emphasized the importance of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations, which serve as a global blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all. Furthermore, I gained a deeper understanding of the Falsafah Pendidikan Kebangsaan (National Philosophy of Education), which aims to nurture well-rounded individuals intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Dr. Suhaimi also introduced us to the Four Pillars of Education for the 21st Century: learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, and learning to be essential elements for holistic human development.
In addition to these discussions, Dr. Suhaimi briefly explained the main topic for the day, focusing on Maqasid Syariah. He highlighted the five essential objectives that every human being must protect and preserve faith (deen), life (nafs), intellect ('aql), lineage (nasl), and wealth (maal). These necessities form the foundation for ensuring justice, harmony, and human dignity within society.
Despite the SDGs being set by the United Nations, we learned that all of the goals are aligned with and do not contradict Islamic principles, which primarily focus on the wellbeing of humanity and the preservation of the environment. Dr. Suhaimi also highlighted how Islamic teachings emphasize sustainability and the responsibility of humans as stewards of the Earth. Finally, he discussed the perspectives of other major religions Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism and their shared concerns regarding the importance of sustainability and the protection of the world for future generations.
