WEEK 1 : INTRO TO SUSTAINABLE OF DEVELOPMENT

Salam to all my respected classmates,

Alhamdulillah, we commenced our first class on the subject of Sustainable Development, taught by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suhaimi Shariff, on 4th March 2025, starting with an introduction to the concept of sustainable development. In today i devided into 2 part of reflection from our first class which was first overview of the SDGs class and first learning of SDGs it self

1. Overview of subject SDGs

In this class, our lecturer, Dr. Suhaimi, introduced the course workload for the entire semester to all students registered for this subject. He outlined all the assessments that we must complete, including quizzes, writing reflective pieces on blogs, newspaper articles, and our SDGs project. In addition, Dr. Suhaimi also introduced the Sejahtera Centre department to the class.

2. First Lessons of Our First Class

Dr. Suhaimi began our class by introducing us to a new type of thinking known as systems thinking, which encourages individuals to understand and analyze issues in a more complex and interconnected way. Systems thinking helps us see how various elements within a system influence one another, allowing for a deeper understanding of challenges and solutions.

Besides that, we also learned about the impact of "development" on the world. Although we, as students, benefit greatly from the rapid development in our country such as through advanced technologies, excellent facilities, and improved infrastructure these developments also bring significant negative effects. For instance, they contribute to the excessive emission of carbon dioxide and other pollutants that harm our environment.

Furthermore, Dr. Suhaimi highlighted several examples of unsustainable exploitation of resources, leading to the degradation and loss of vital natural resources. Resources such as clean water, fertile soil, and pure air are increasingly becoming strained and scarce due to irresponsible development practices.

In discussing the concept of sustainability, there are three basic principles:

  1. Living within the Earth's limits to preserve the planet’s capacity to support life.

  2. Understanding the interconnection between the economy, society, and the environment.

  3. Ensuring fair distribution of resources to sustain the needs of future generations.

Through this lesson, we began to appreciate the importance of thinking critically and responsibly about development, ensuring that progress today does not come at the cost of tomorrow.
